ACTUATE - a project to optimise driving performance for reduced energy consumption

As studies show, safe eco-driving has the potential to make bus and tram fleets more energy-efficient. The ACTUATE project will therefore develop and apply advanced training and education services for safe ecodriving of clean vehicles in the electric public transport sector.

By supporting the introduction of safe eco-driving trainings, ACTUATE further exploits the additional energy-saving potential of clean vehicles such as trams, hybrid buses, trolleybuses or e-buses which will further promote their take-up. ACTUATE´s trainings will complement existing eco-driving forces that primarily focus on diesel-engine vehicles.

The project lays a particular focus on the drivers as they are the pivotal element for better driving performance and energy saving. Encouragement campaigns will ensure that the drivers apply the instructions provided in the trainings also in the long term.

A project to optimise driving performance...

  • to establish safer and more energy-efficient driving of clean vehicles
  • to realise the full potential of clean vehicles by making them more economical through
  • developing and testing trainings for safe eco-driving and
  • encouragement campaigns for drivers of trams, trolleybuses, hybrid buses and e-buses with supercapacitors

Eco-driving describes driving practices that optimise energy use and considerably contribute to emission reduction as promoted by the EC. Identifying and finally reducing inefficient driving habits (e.g. harsh braking, hard accelerating) and energy-wasting manoeuvres (e.g. idling, hard turning) has the potential to reduce operating costs and emissions. Safe eco-driving simply means smarter and more energy-efficient driving. As the potential is already well-known for private cars and diesel buses, eco-driving for electric fleets in the public transport sector is a concept not widely known yet.
